LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Pray for unity between political parties

A little more than three years ago, when Donald Trump announced that he was going to run for president of the United States, we began to see hatred rising up in most all of the Democratic party, some of the main line Republicans and much of the liberal news media.

We in America had something like this happen many years ago when President Abraham Lincoln wanted to free the slaves. Many Southerners hated him, and many of his own party hated him, and the news media wasn’t always friendly to Lincoln. Both sides believed that God was on their side and was going to help them win the war. Even Lincoln wrote this in the summer of 1862 when he said, “in great contests each party claims to be acting in accordance with the will of God. Both may be, but one must be wrong. God cannot be for and against the same thing at the same time.”

In one of the earliest battles, at Antietam in 1862, both sides lost more men than were killed on D-Day. Some of these Civil War soldiers battled against their own brothers or relatives according to the PBS documentary, The Civil War. Two years ago, my wife and I stood on the battle field at Gettysburg and saw firsthand of the hatred from stories told of that great battle. It’s amazing that the people of one nation could be so divide from hate and yet become united again.

Dr. Raymond Brock tells us in development of emotional problems related to anger that there are seven phases – hurt, frustration, fear, anger, wrath, hostility and hate. Hate is bottled-up hostility which may be turned inward in depression or grow to the point of exploding into violence directed at one’s self or toward the person or group that is blamed for the original hurt is hate. It is easy to see that there is a lot of hate for President Trump for anything that he does according to news outlets, and from a man that truly does want to Make America Great Again.

So with so much hatred being thrown around, could this nation ever end up in another civil war? If we as the greatest nation on the face of this planet can’t come together and work out our problems and stop hating each other it could end up destroying us. I believe that God can help change us and this nation once again if we put our faith in him. In 2 Chronicles 7:14 it says “If my people, who are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins, and will heal their land.”

I believe that God is about ready to do something great again in this nation but till he does we as Christians need to pray. I like the word PUSH (pray until something happens). We as believers need to continue praying over this nation, the world and our political parties because the devil only wants only to destroy us. In the end, I believe that cooler heads will prevail and unity will once again happen between our two parties with the help of God and his Love.
