Homestead’s selection to Hall of Fame Classic opens up SAC tournament schedule questions

Monday’s noon announcement that the Homestead girls’ basketball team would participate in the 2018 Hall of Fame Classic at New Castle on Dec. 28 was some welcome news for the Spartans.

It also creates a potential problem.

Last year, the SAC Holiday Tournament at Wayne High School was held from Dec. 27-30 at Wayne High School. Using the same scheduling format, the 2018 edition of the annual tournament would begin on Wednesday, Dec. 26 and conclude on Saturday, Dec. 29.

But with Homestead now set to play Jeffersonville at approximately 11 a.m. on Dec. 28 and a second game in the evening, the Spartans will either have to miss the SAC Holiday Tournament or the schedule will have to be changed.

“I believe the SAC is going to structure a holiday tournament schedule that would allow us to do both,” said Homestead coach Rod Parker when asked about the conflict.

According to Wayne Athletic Director Gary Raber, the schedule for the holiday tournament has yet to be finalized.

One option could be the adoption of a three-day tournament format in which the semifinals and finals are played in the same day. This would involve a Dec. 26, Dec. 27 and Dec. 29 schedule with six games played each day.
