Concordia Lutheran High School names new head boys basketball coach

Phil Brackmann

Concordia Lutheran High School has its new head boys basketball coach.

Athletic Director Tim Mannigel announced on Friday afternoon that Phil Brackmann, Dean of Student Success at Concordia, will head up the basketball program going forward.

Brackmann succeeds former coach Austin Thoms, who stepped down from both head coach of the basketball program and his administrative position within the school in March.

“Phil fit every criteria we were looking for as we began this coaching search,” Mannigel said. “He’s passionate about basketball, but more importantly, passionate about young people. He’s an excellent Christian role model who knows basketball and how to relate to players. The students in the building really appreciate him; he’s able to build an easy rapport with everyone he meets.

“His experiences while playing and coaching under some basketball-savvy mentors give him (and Concordia) an added bonus.”

Brackmann, a 2004 graduate of Concordia, came to his alma mater in 2013 after five years at Churubusco, where he was an assistant coach with the boys basketball, baseball and golf programs. He formerly taught math at Concordia before moving into his current role in 2016.

Brackmann served two years as an assistant coach under former coach Tim Reinking.

The Cadets’ new head coach will look to end a half-decade of struggles for the program. In the 2012-2013 season, Concordia won 23 games and advanced to the Class 3A state title game, losing in overtime to Greensburg. The Cadets have not finished a season with a winning record since.

Brackmann graduated from Indiana Wesleyan in 2008, playing four years for the Wildcats during his college years. He has a wife Elisa and two children, Stella and Connor.

Last year saw Concordia finish 8-17 on the court, with talk hinting at tumultuous behind-the-scenes drama involving Thoms, players and parents.

With Brackmann, Concordia hopes that the program is back on track.

“We’re excited to start this new era of Concordia basketball with Phil leading the program,” Mannigel said.
