IPFW picks 4 finalists for AD position

Campus interviews set to take place later next month.

The search committee for a new IPFW athletic direction announced a field of four finalists Friday:

* Interim Athletic Director and women’s volleyball coach Kelley Hartley Hutton

* Wisconsin-Stevens Point director of athletics Daron Montgomery

* University of California-Davis Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator Nona Richardson

* Oregon State University Senior Associate Athletic Director Mark Spencer.

“I think the overall quality is fantastic,” said search committee chairman and IPFW Comptroller Dan Gebhart. “After we narrowed it to our initial number of 12, we felt very comfortable with all of them. We did phone interviews with nine of them, and nobody really ruled themselves out through that process.

“I’m really excited about who we have coming in. I really like their credentials, and they are excited about coming.”

Former IPFW athletic director Tommy Bell left to take the same position at Western Illinois in August.

Hartley Hutton has been the interim director of athletics at IPFW since August, and previously served as the school’s senior woman administrator from July 1999 until March 2012. She is also the head coach of the Mastodon women’s volleyball program, with a 314-162 record in 15 seasons, including taking the team to two NCAA Tournaments.

Prior to working at UW-Stevens Point, Montgomery worked at the University of Detroit Mercy in roles of increasing responsibility, culminating in the senior associate athletic director position.

Richardson spent 13 months at UC-Davis as interim athletic director. From October 2002 through April 2007 she was associate athletic director and senior woman administrator at Ball State University.

Spencer has been associate athletic director at Oregon State since October 2010 after four years as the school’s associate athletic director. Previously he spent four years at Saint Louis University as assistant and then associate athletic director.

Campus visits will begin with Spencer on January 21-22, Hartley Hutton on January 23-24, Richardson on January 26-27 and Montgomery on January 30-31. Candidates’ itineraries will be released in early January.

A potential selection announcement will not be made until at least February. There were originally 86 candidates for the position.

Members of the search committee include women’s studies professor Janet Badia; faculty athletic representative Elliott Blumenthal; community member and booster Rick Evans; men’s basketball coach Tony Jasick; senior women’s administrator Christine Kuznar; community member and booster Larry Lee; accounting faculty member Cynthia Lloyd; office of institutional equity member Christine Marcuccilli; Indiana Purdue student government association representative Raija Ochola; women’s soccer coach Margaret Saurin; baseball player Malcolm White; and Director of Athletic Compliance Wendy Wilson.
