INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 1 University of Saint Francis football team had its most difficult test of the season, and passed with its perfect record intact.
Saint Francis (5-0) beat No. 8 Marian 31-24 in the schools’ annual Franciscan Bowl showdown of NAIA powers on Saturday at Marian’s St. Vincent Health Field.
Justin Green’s 10-yard touchdown run to cap a 13-play, 89-yard drive with 6:50 left in the game proved to be the game-winning score. After falling behind 14-0 and trailing 24-17 at the half, Saint Francis’ defense shut out the Knights (2-2) in the second half.
Saint Francis quarterback Nick Ferrer completed 33 of 38 passes for 403 yards and three touchdowns. Rocky James caught 12 passes for 163 yards and Dan Ricksy 10 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. Sean Boswell (6 catches, 51 yards) and Green also caught touchdown passes.
Green rushed 35 times for 138 yards. Blake Schumacher had a key interception for the Cougars in the first half and Wilmer Cole broke up a potential touchdown pass in the second half.
